Microbial
contaminants, particularly molds, account for half of all indoor
air complaints. The EPA and others agree that excess moisture
is the cause of mold, microbial growth, pollution and even sick
building syndrome (www.epa.gov/iaq). To control these problems,
you have to control moisture. AC professionals say the highest
humidity in a building is likely to occur when the air conditioner
is turned off. Air is cooled and moisture removed by the AC when
it is running. When turned off, a build-up of moisture quickly
begins. The bad news is that EVEN WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER ON,
NOT ENOUGH MOISTURE IS BEING EXTRACTED. In an effort to take out
excess humidity, some engineers add capacity to the system design
-- this overcools the space and increases the humidity problem.
Air
conditioning systems (especially the high efficiency ones) cycle
on and off so quickly that little moisture is removed from the
air. The AC lowers the sensible load of moisture, but the latent
load remains constant because of the amount of outside air being
introduced (ASHRAE STD 62-99). By adding a desiccant filter system
(Awesome Air®), you divide the sensible and latent loads of
moisture. Every AC system will benefit from using the Awesome
Air® Filter system to dry the air being fed into the system.
The system won't cycle on and off as often - making your air conditioner
an energy savings device.
During
humid weather, keep your air conditioners running even when the
building is empty (evenings and weekends, etc.). Adjust the thermostat
upward. When the building is occupied, reset to a more comfortable
